1997-Present
In 1997 I began growing a series of sculptures from mushrooms. Initially these were grown from oyster mushrooms, but starting around the year 2000 I began to use the Ganoderma lucidum fungus, both for aesthetic and material reasons.
16″ x 14″ x 32″
This particular one was grown to resemble the famous photograph made by Harold Edgerton of a milk splash.
Chunky
This was an experiment in gigantism. “Chunky” is a very large fungal object that was caste in a double hulled container- the same method one would use to make a bell. Chunky measures 36” in diameter, is 36” tall, and was made from forty five gallons of substrate. I did not have the facilities to keep it alive for very long and could not grow out the antlers beyond a nub stage.
